WHAT IS OSTEOPATHY?
OS˙TE˙OP˙A˙THY
noun
“Osteopathy is a scientific method of healing by skillful manipulation of the human body, based on a thorough knowledge of anatomy and physiology, by which the operator is enabled to trace effects to their cause and remove them, thus restoring harmony throughout the body – which is health.”
– BA Duffield, early American Osteopath
'Osteo' denotes 'structure', and 'pathos' denotes 'suffering of', with the combined meaning of "suffering of the structure".
Osteopathic manual therapy was founded by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still in 1874 in Kirksville, Missouri.
Through thorough research into body's anatomical structure and physiology, Dr. Still was able to find a deeper understanding of functional treatment. Using this knowledge, he found he could facilitate the innate self-healing and self-regulating function of his patients through manual therapy and adjustment.
